Life is tough but I am living and I plan to do the same for the rest of my live
“I was 18 when I first started selling fruits and now I am 76. Everything around me has changed except my fate. God blessed me with 5 children. Three daughters and two sons. My younger son who was 25 died of Hepatitis C on 9th of Muharram (tears started rolling down his cheeks). We took him to this Dr. And by God, I won’t lie, he never charged us (Yes! There are good doctors too!). But my son never recovered. His time came and he had to go. I was shattered at that time.
All my daughters are married, Alhamdulilah. I have been through many contrasting phases of life. My daughter became a widow recently and she had a plot to her name for which she’s being forced to defile the claim. I beg her not to give up on that at any cost. I have become old and I don’t want to be dragged into courts. Justice might take the rest of my life. Also, I have to earn to feed my wife and myself. Poverty causes problems that you won’t ever understand. Always be thankful for whatever condition you’re in.
Old age is a tough thing. Due to the high beam lights of cars and the darkness in-between, I can’t see clearly at night and consequently I try to reach home before Maghrib/Sunset. There was a time when I used to push this cart actively but now I embrace it to walk. I pluck Guavas on Cold rainy days when youngsters like you refuse to go into the garden excusing the chill. I go there for I can’t take even a single leave. My wife waits for me back home. We survive one day after another.
Namaz is the one lesson I learnt from life that never to even skip it. I never sell substandard products. I am poor but I am honest. Life is tough but I am living, still. And I plan to do the same for the rest of it, to live. I don’t know how but I still feel alive from inside. I hope to get all the fruits that I sold in this world in the afterlife provided I qualify for heaven.” (laughter)
My advice for everyone will be “Whatever mood you’re in, always greet others with a smile.”
